The museum project, which the European Parliament is establishing in Brussels, will give visitors the opportunity to learn about European history and to engage in critical reflection about its meaning for the present day.

ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño has completed the basic design, and is currently carrying out the technical development of the project for the House of European History in Brussels, located in Leopold Park. The opening of the museum is planned for the end of 2015.

The 4000 square meters of the future House of European History, which will be located in the totally renovated Eastman building, will offer the visitors a collection of exhibits that are representative for the European history aiming to reflect the diversity of the continent as well as its common roots. The museum will also contribute to a better understanding of the origin of the European institutions, through the use of conventional museum resources as well as sophisticated audiovisuals, interactive units.

The museum project, developed by the European Parliament and designed by ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño will provide all the visitors with information translated in the 24 official languages of the European Union. Each visitor will be given a tablet that will guide them through the museum, automatically translating all contents and offering additional information by means of audiovisuals, audios, still images, graphics and texts.

Structure of the exhibition

The ground and first floors will host the temporary exhibitions, while the permanent exhibition will begin on the second floor, where the visitor will have a general overview of the geographical definitions and visions of Europe throughout time, as well as the cultural, social and historical heritage of the continent. The rest of the floors will chronologically present the history of Europe, covering its great landmarks from its uprising into modernity in the 19th century, when Europe became a world power: the foundational myths to the formation of the countries, the revolutionary period, the two World Wars, the tensions between democracy and totalitarianism, the political division during the Cold War, the overcoming of dictatorship in Southern Europe, the collapse of socialist countries and the fall of the Iron Curtain.. Within this broader context the visitors will get an overview of the milestones that mark the European integration process.

On the last floor, the visitors will be able to give their opinion on various European issues, participate in games, learn about Brussels and enjoy an audiovisual experience through the diverse European heritage.

The origins of the project

Hans-Gert Pöttering, President of the European Parliament between 2007 and 2009, proposed the idea of creating a House of European History. In his acceptance speech he said: “It should be a place where a memory of European history and the work of European unification is jointly cultivated, and which at the same time is available as a locus for the European identity to go on being shaped by present and future citizens of the European Union.”. The building was built in 1935 to house a dental clinic for disadvantaged children and started being renovated to host the museum in November 2012. ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño joined the project in April of 2013 to develop the project´s design and assist in the execution.
