Russian president Vladimir Putin opened the centre dedicated to the former president which features museographic innovations such as a nine-metre curved screen, an immersive audiovisual theatre, interactive resources and reconstructions of historical scenes.

ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño was responsible for the technical development and implementation of the museum, designed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA).

On November 25th last, Vladimir Putin, the president of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian prime minister, and Boris Yeltsin’s widow, Naina Yeltsina, opened the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center, dedicated to Boris Yeltsin as the first president of the Russian Federation, the technical development and implementation of which were entrusted to ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño by the prime contractor, RAA.

The ACCIONA group subsidiary that specializes in museums, exhibitions and events used the most innovative exhibition techniques in fitting out the museum, integrating state-of-the-art technology such as a curved LED screen more than nine metres long, an immersive audiovisual theatre, tablets and touchscreen devices, reconstructions, interactive panels, etc.

The Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center in Ekaterinburg (Russia) houses a collection of original objects and documents that belonged to Boris Yeltsin, representative artefacts from the time he was in power and reconstructions of important historical scenes during that period, such as the Kremlin office (with its original furniture), the Politburo meeting room, a Moscow street scene, a typical Russian apartment and a barricade that recreates the attempted coup of August 1991. These spaces are enhanced by numerous audiovisual and interactive productions which store historical archives and original interviews with some of the most important political figures of that period, including international statesmen such as Bill Clinton and Tony Blair.

ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño was responsible for the technical development and implementation of the permanent exhibition space of the museum, which occupies a total area of 2,300 square metres over two floors.

The objects and resources on the ground floor help to contextualize the exhibition in the historical, cultural and political framework of 20th century Russia, while the upper floor is divided into seven rooms, each of which is devoted to a particular period in the creation of contemporary Russia, through which visitors journey by means of scenarios that recreate key spaces and times in the period between 1987 and 1999.

These scenic recreations of historic places and times include the Politburo, in which a life-size image of Boris Yeltsin portrays the moment he gave his “secret speech” before the Central Committee Plenary in October 1987; a Moscow trolleybus in 1985, showing images of the president’s childhood; the living room of an apartment that reproduces everyday life on the day of the attempted coup in 1991 against President Gorbachev; a supermarket containing the typical products of that time; and a radio station where visitors can listen to the radio speeches that Yeltsin gave during his second mandate between October 1996 and August 1998.

Among the technological innovations developed by ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño for the museum is the “Atrium”, where a nine-metre long curved LED screen shows some of the key moments in the political and personal life of Boris Yeltsin.

Finally, the “Freedom Gallery” offers testimonials from dignitaries and ordinary people about Boris Yeltsin and the historical era of which he was a protagonist and offers visitors the chance to record their own thoughts about freedom in the interactive feature, “What Freedom Means to Me”.
