The museum has received the European Museum of the Year award for its “exceptional and daring achievement, challenging common perceptions of museums in society”. ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño is responsible for its technical development and museographic implementation.
The Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center has won the European Museum of the Year award –in the Kenneth Hudson category- for the most innovative museum project of the year that “challenges common perception of the roles of museums in society”.
In the case of the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center, implemented by ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño (APD) and designed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates, the jury highlighted “the spectacular design of the museum, its first-rate multimedia elements, the curation of the exhibitions and the cultural content of its conferences, courses and other activities”.
The museum’s 2,300m2, located in Yekaterinburg, is distributed on two floors and introduces a period of history that ranges from the end of the Soviet Union and the birth of a new Russia. APD used the most innovative exhibition techniques in fitting out the museum, integrating state-of-the-art technology such as a curved LED screen more than 9 metres long, an immersive audio-visual theatre, tablets and touchscreen devices, reconstructions, interactive panels, etc. The technological elements are an addition to the original objects and recreations of the different historical theatres of this period.
The objects and resources on the ground floor help to contextualize the exhibition in the historical, cultural and political framework of 20th century Russia, while the upper floor is divided into seven rooms that open onto a central plaza, each one devoted to a particular period in the creation of contemporary Russia.
Organized by the European Museum Forum (EMF), the EMYA are the longest running and most prestigious awards in Europe in this field and their aim is to recognize excellence in European museums and to encourage innovative processes for the benefit of society.
ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño has already received the European Museum of the Year Award on several occasions. In 2004, the Museum of Archaeology of Alicante (MARQ) was considered the best European Museum of the Year, and in 2008 and 2011, Special Commendations were handed out to the Museum of Almería and the Museum of CajaGRANADA Memories of Andalusia, respectively.
