The Forum was held on 24, 25 and 26 January in Seville and brought together representatives from 170 local governments, institutions and companies from around the world to discuss and analyse the major global challenges to sustainable development.

APD supplied the audiovisual equipment and the technical services and designed and produced the event, which featured talks, themed meetings, presentations and exhibition and networking zones.

ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño (APD) was responsible for supplying the audiovisual equipment and the technical services and designing and producing the II Global Forum of Local Governments, which took place on 24, 25 and 26 January in Seville.

The event was officiated by HM The King of Spain, Felipe VI, and involved 170 local government delegations from around the world, institutions and companies who came together to discuss and analyse the major global challenges to creating more inclusive and sustainable development from an economic, social and environmental perspective.

The Forum, an international initiative supported by the United Nations, examined key aspects to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement on climate change, as well as implementing the Urban Agenda 2030 signed in Quito in January 2019.

Over 1,100 people took part in this second edition of the Forum, which featured an extensive program of activities, manly held at FIBES, Seville’s exhibition and conference centre. Other activities in the program took place at the Royal Alcázar of Seville, where a gala dinner and the “Golden Experiences” awards ceremony were held, and at Seville City Hall, where the closing ceremony for the event took place.

Exhibition of the 5th Centenary of the First Round-the-world Voyage

The Forum dedicated a space to commemorate the first circumnavigation of the Earth, the greatest milestone in maritime history, which celebrates 500 years in 2019 and is especially significant for Seville. APD designed and produced 19 display panels for the exhibition, and various graphical elements including a diorama. It also put together the “Jardín Cosmopolita” (Cosmopolitan Garden) display, a project by Seville City Council in collaboration with the regional government of Andalusia and the Andalusian Historical Heritage Institute (IAPH), conceived and curated by Nomad Garden, as part of the official program by the national commission for the 5th Centenary of the First Circumnavigation of the Earth

Seville Innovation Hub Area

The second edition of the Forum included the Seville Innovation Hub Area for the first time. This space was dedicated to displaying the achievements and innovations carried out by companies based in Seville but with a global presence in sectors such as energy, IT, smart cities, education, healthcare, big data, digital training and telecommunications.

APD designed a circular stage for this zone around which the 18 companies of the Seville Hub assembled. The companies were then able to present their innovations in the central space to the whole community attending the Forum.

ACCIONA Innovation Area

Other new features at this year’s Forum included the ACCIONA Innovation Area. This space allowed visitors to learn about important solutions for sustainable development promoted by the company in areas such as renewable energy, water, construction, infrastructures, smart cities, sustainable mobility, technology and transport engineering.

APD set up an augmented reality space for this zone called Mixed Reality, which used Magic Leap headsets to showcase the company’s most innovative international projects. These headsets, the most advanced on the market, offered visitors a virtual reality experience, such as visiting the inside of a wind turbine, seeing how it works and climbing up more than 100 metres to the top. The experience was developed by the Marketing Department together with ACCIONA’s Innovation Department.

The Innovation Area also featured ACCIONA Mobility’s scooter sharing service, through which the company is tackling the challenge of sustainable mobility. APD designed and assembled the ACCIONA Motosharing stand to show visitors how these electric scooters are powered by rechargeable batteries and are already in operation in cities like Madrid and Valencia.

Plenary hall and side rooms

The main location for the Forum was Pavilion II of Seville’s Conference and Exhibition Centre, where the main activities of the event took place. This hall hosted talks and discussion sessions, as well as several institutional events including the opening ceremony by the Mayor of Seville, Juan Espadas; the official inauguration by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Spanish government, Carmen Calvo; and the central event, officiated by HM King Felipe VI. APD set up an LED screen in this hall, which had a capacity for 500 people, and the audiovisual equipment project the multimedia content of the presentations given by the delegates.

Simultaneously, APD set up two other rooms with a capacity for 120 and 180 people, which hosted working sessions, and themed meetings and presentations about issues such as smart cities, inclusive cities and employment, infrastructure and mobility, and energy and efficiency.

Golden Experiences Awards

Lastly, the Forum program also included the “Golden Experiences” awards ceremony on Thursday 24 January at the Royal Alcázar. The awards are presented in the categories for Smart Cities, Sustainability, Social Inclusion and Sustainable Tourism. APD organised a photocall with a podium for the group photo and a lectern to allow participants to speak for the prize-giving.

Carbon neutral event

The Forum was a carbon neutral event, in line with ACCIONA’s unwavering commitment to sustainability in all of its activities, meaning that the CO2 emissions associated with the event will be offset so that the final emissions balance is zero.
